Report: Stuxnet cyberweapon older than believed

(AP) ? An anti-virus firm says the cyberweapon that targeted an Iranian nuclear plant is older than previously believed, a finding that may shed more light on a mysterious series of attacks attributed by security experts to U.S. and Israeli intelligence.

The Stuxnet worm, which experts believe damaged or destroyed centrifuges at Iran's Natanz plant in about 2009, revolutionized the cybersecurity field because it was the first known computer attack specifically tailored to cause real-world damage.

Previously the earliest samples of Stuxnet dated from 2009, but Symantec's findings push the timeline back.

The company said late Tuesday it found a primitive version of the worm dating back to November 2007 and that one element of the program dates to late 2005.

U.S. and Israeli officials have declined to comment on the attacks.

European Court hears Spanish case against Google

(AP) ? The European Court of Justice is hearing a case that pits Spain's data protection agency against search engine giant Google over the thorny issue of "the right to be forgotten" online.

A Spanish court sought Tuesday's hearing in Luxembourg to clarify if Google is subject to Spanish and European data protection laws.

In the case ? one of many between Spain and Google ? a person found that keying their name into Google shows a newspaper link to a property auction years ago owing to payment failure. The person wants the link removed, which the agency says Google should do. Google believes that's the newspaper's responsibility.

A ruling isn't expected for months.

If it goes in Spain's favor, Google could be made to erase documents people feel violate their privacy.

The Engadget Interview: Huawei Device Chairman Richard Yu at MWC 2013

Image

Some companies have mascots, but Huawei has Richard Yu. Shortly after the Ascend P2 launch yesterday, we had a chance to catch up with a rather relaxed Chairman of Huawei Device to see what he's been up to, as well as picking his brain on the design decisions of the P2, what Huawei's going to do about the "1,000-yuan ($160) phone" problem, and his side of the Honor 2 AnTuTu benchmark cheating story. Yu also consistently failed to resist the urge to tease a couple of upcoming phones as well (including the super slim P Series phone that failed to show up at MWC), so enjoy the full interview after the break.

(AP) ? A judge in the Dominican Republic ruled Monday that the winner of a TV talent show can be held in jail for up to a year while authorities investigate her alleged involvement in drug smuggling.

Martha Heredia, a 22-year-old Dominican singer who was a winner of the show "Latin American Idol," was arrested at a Dominican airport on Wednesday as she was about to board a flight to New York. Police allege she had 2.9 pounds (1.3 kilograms) of heroin stuffed in the heels of three pairs of platform shoes.

On Monday, Judge Deyanira Vasquez ruled that Heredia can be held for a year in jail. No charges have been filed, but the Dominican legal systems allows for lengthy preventative detention.

Heredia's lawyer, Felix Portes, said there is "no evidence" that links the singer to the suitcase where the heroin was found.

Portes tried unsuccessfully to get the court to authorize Heredia's transfer from a lockup to a medical clinic, arguing she had underwent a liposuction procedure in recent weeks and was experiencing discomfort.

Heredia had become a local star after she won the final "Latin American Idol" contest in 2009. The show, which ran for three years, was a Spanish-language version of the popular "Idols" franchise. Her subsequent musical career failed to take off.

Pope Benedict XVI's last Sunday blessing from window on St. Peter's Square draws crowd

VATICAN CITY - Pope Benedict XVI has given his pontificate's final Sunday blessing from his studio window to the cheers of tens of thousands of people in St. Peter's Square.

Benedict says even though he's retiring on Thursday from the papacy, the first pope in 600 years to do so, he's "not abandoning the church." Instead he says he'll serve the church with the same dedication he has till now, but will do so in a way "more suitable to my age and my strength." Benedict, 85, will spend his last years in prayer, meditation and seclusion in a monastery on Vatican City's grounds.

He has one more public appearance, at his weekly audience on Wednesday in the square.

86% Tabu

All Critics (43) | Top Critics (11) | Fresh (37) | Rotten (6)

It almost seems a parody of willfully obscure art-house fare. Yet it has an undertow that sucks you in as often as it strands you back on shore.

A kind of jigsaw puzzle, spiced up with references to "White Mischief," "Out of Africa" and "The Snows of Kilimanjaro," that will frustrate some audiences and fascinate others.

The audience is left to imagine much of the story, though it is clear it involves love, betrayal, guilt, regret and a recurring crocodile.

Portuguese director Miguel Gomes' latest film moves through different styles and eras, and proves that shooting in black and white is as versatile as it ever was.

Few films are this smart about subtly couching their allegorical aspirations within more straightforward narratives; fewer still are able to do so with such energetically inventive virtuoso style.

If you have the patience to watch this film develop and unfold, like some bizarre night-blooming orchid, what you'll see is not just the last movie released in 2012, but possibly the most original of them all.

The latter part of the film recalls 1987's "White Mischief," but in Gomes's hands, the story becomes much more...the past and the present continually flow into one another...

The black-and-white cinematography and silent-film feel are haunting and nostalgic, and Aurora's story encapsulates a broader, bittersweet truth about the perils of tinted memory.

For a decades-spanning, country-hopping romance on a low budget, "Tabu" looks great...it intentionally evokes in aesthetics, settings and/or plot elements such cinematic classics as "Casablanca," "The Postman Always Rings Twice" (1946) and more.

The influences of Murnau's 1931 black-and-white Tabu are more thematic than stylistic in this uncategorizable new film

If in the first half Gomes dares the audience to be bored, the second half is a cinephile's payoff.

Patient viewers will find some rewards with a quirky and charming film that develops a wealth of emotional depth.

A dreadfully slow screenplay in the second half undercuts the interesting handling of black and white exposition.

Churlish though it sounds, you'll want to arrive for this b&w Portuguese drama about 45 minutes late.

Droll, mysterious, enchanting, and altogether singular.

After a point, you start to forget what actual boundary-pushing cinema looks like. Well, it looks like this.

Sophisticated, lyrical and quietly moving. Patient and intelligent audience members will be the most rewarded.
