El Paso coach, counselor arrested in drug case

El Paso County sheriff's deputies arrested an assistant coach and an elementary counselor on Thursday for allegedly possessing cocaine, authorities said.

On Thursday, Raul Gomez and Joe Paul Solis were arrested for possession of a controlled substance, deputies said.

Gomez, 59, is an assistant girls basketball coach for Del Valle High School in the Ysleta Independent School District.

Solis, 43, is employed as a counselor at Frank Macias Elementary School in the Clint Independent School District.

Sheriff's deputies arrested and booked both men into El Paso County Jail on Thursday.

Gomez was arrested on suspicion of possessing between 4 grams and 200 grams of a controlled substance. His bond was set at $12,000.

Solis was arrested on suspicion of possessing between 1 gram and 4 grams of cocaine. His bond was set at $5,000.

Both were released Friday.

Del Valle football coach and campus athletic coordinator Jesse Perales said he did not know about the situation and referred all questions and comments to the Ysleta district spokeswoman, Patricia Ayala.

Ayala said officials were aware of the arrest and said the district would take appropriate action to ensure the safety of the students.

Laura Cade, spokeswoman for the Clint district, said officials were looking into the matter.

"The district will take appropriate action in accordance with district policy once the matter has been carefully reviewed,"

Cade said.

It was unknown whether either employee would be suspended without pay, officials said.
