World diaper output may take a hit from blasts at Japan plant

TOKYO | Sat Sep 29, 2012 11:48pm EDT

TOKYO (Reuters) - Global diaper output is likely to take a hit from an increase in the price of acrylic acid after a chemical tank explosion at Nippon Shokubai Co's 4114. Himeji plant in Japan, a main production base of the ingredient, Japanese media reported.

Nippon Shokubai is one of the world's biggest makers of acrylic acid, the main ingredient of a resin called SAP, which is used in diapers.

The plant produces about 20 percent of the world's SAP and 10 percent of global output of acrylic acid.

Operations at the plant are likely to be halted for a long time and other makers of SAP resins are operating on a full-production footing, leaving little room for back-up production, the Nikkei business daily said on Sunday.

The explosion occurred on Saturday afternoon at an acrylic acid residue tank and the fire spread to another acrylic acid tank and a toluene tank.

Two explosions occurred, killing a 28-year-old fire fighter and injuring 33 people. The fire was put out on Saturday night. (Reporting by Tetsushi Kajimoto; Editing by Robert Birsel)

Los Angeles drivers see minimal traffic in "Carmageddon 2"

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Drivers in Los Angeles saw limited congestion on Saturday near a key freeway corridor shut down this weekend in what has been dubbed "Carmageddon 2," due to fears of gridlock from a 53-hour construction project, officials said.

A 10-mile (16-km) stretch of the 405 Freeway at the Sepulveda Pass, normally the nation's busiest thoroughfare, was closed at midnight on Friday for a $1 billion freeway widening project.

But so far, despite the slowing near the project itself, traffic seemed to be zipping along in the city as a whole, said California Highway Patrol spokeswoman Officer Charmaine Fajardo.

"So far so good, it looks like people are heeding the information we've put out there and staying out of the area," Fajardo said.

Construction crews with giant cranes on Saturday chipped away at a bridge spanning the 405 Freeway in the city, with pieces of concrete dropping dozens of feet (meters) to the ground below. A four-foot (1.2-metre) pad of dirt laid down in advance protected the pavement from the falling debris.

The work is to widen the bridge itself to expand the freeway below.

The project comes just over a year after a similar weekend construction shut down the same area in what was dubbed "Carmageddon," in anticipation of massive congestion that never came to pass as many drivers stayed home.

This year, the project has caused some anxiety nonetheless among officials and motorists in the city where car travel is king but only very limited congestion had materialized by noon.

More significant delays could develop on Saturday afternoon as people pile into cars heading for the beach, highway patrol officials said.

The shutdown of the 405 Freeway along the Sepulveda Pass is scheduled to end at 5 a.m. on Monday, said Marc Littman, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

The construction crew on the project stands to be fined $6,000 per closed lane for every 10 minutes that the project extends past its scheduled ending on Monday morning, officials said. (Reporting by Alex Dobuzinskis; Editing by Colleen Jenkins and Sandra Maler)

EU raids lead recycling firms in cartel investigation

(Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved a new drug for advanced colon cancer developed by Bayer AG, a month ahead of the agency's expected action date for a decision. The drug, to be sold under the brand name Stivarga, was approved to treat colon cancer that has progressed after prior treatment or that has spread to other parts of the body, the agency said. "Someone has clearly lit a fire under the FDA," Sanford Bernstein analyst Geoffrey Porges said of the speedy approval. ...

Big Business Increasingly Supports Gay Rights - Susan McPherson ...

From Chick-fil-A to Apple, more and more major companies are taking policy positions on gay marriage. Arguably, there's a business case for supporting it. Google, Starbucks, Nike, General Mills, and other big brands have all opened themselves up to both the potential risk and opportunity of supporting LGBT equality. Even Lloyd Blankfein, CEO of Goldman Sachs, announced his support in a Human Rights Campaign public service announcement: "America's corporations learned long ago that equality is just good business and it's the right thing to do."

There has been a steady increase in the number of large employers including sexual orientation in non-discrimination policies and offering same-sex partner benefits. A 2010 Mercer survey of about 3,000 companies found that same-sex benefits were offered by 72 percent of companies employing more than 20,000 people. Americans align themselves with brands that reflect their values ? and according to recent opinion polls by Gallup, ABC, and CNN, marriage equality is now supported by a majority of mainstream Americans.

Surely no company wants to discriminate, and all should consider the growing support for one of the last frontiers of federal civil rights. But there are also concrete business reasons for a company announcing its support of LGBT equality ? all tied to the bottom line.

It boosts employee recruitment and retention. The 15th Annual PWC Global CEO Survey (2012) section titled "The Talent Challenge" focused on the impact talent recruitment and retention has on business growth and competitive differentiation. The study also highlighted the increasing recognition of the importance of employee engagement in improved performance and retention. As a recognized and critical success driver, it is not surprising that some companies have cited talent as a key argument for supporting LGBT equality. Additionally, with LGBT employees making up 5-10% of the working population, companies neglecting to promote an inclusive culture will likely miss out on the opportunity to attract top talent from this segment of the workforce.

Former President Bill Clinton emphasized this point with a message to North Carolinians earlier this year, urging them to vote against the state's proposed ban same-sex marriage. He said: "What it will change is North Carolina's ability to keep businesses, attract new jobs, and attract and keep talented entrepreneurs." Microsoft echoed Clinton's argument with a post on the company blog in January 2012 announcing its alliance with other Washington State-based businesses taking a stand in support of marriage equality: "As other states recognize marriage equality, Washington's employers are at a disadvantage if we cannot offer a similar, inclusive environment to our talented employees, our top recruits and their families."

Corporate cultures where diversity and openness thrive will more likely attract top talent, especially young, creative, and entrepreneurial candidates. For example, when Dow Chemical received recognition from the Human Rights Campaign for its support of LGBT rights, the company agreed with this sentiment: "We have long believed that the ability to present a truly diverse and inclusive workplace is critical to our success and integral to our strategy to attract, develop and retain the best and brightest talent." This kind of inclusive environment not only warms the LGBT talent base to your company, but also their friends and family, who happen to make up 60% of the population according to a recent CNN poll.

The marketplace demands it. Back in 1991, a Wall Street Journal article included a chart entitled, "A Dream Market," comparing gay households to the national average, noting the relative potential advertising appeal for a variety of industries. The two decades that have followed have seen an increase in marketing and advertising to the LGBT market that Marketing firm Witeck-Combs estimated at $800 billion in 2011.

LGBT marketing is on the rise. In May, JCPenney released a Father's Day ad featuring two dads and their kids; the ad debuted several months after the organization One Million Moms attempted to boycott the department store for selecting Ellen DeGeneres as its spokesperson. In June, it was reported that Apple's new mobile operating system, iOS6, will include gay and lesbian couple icons as emoticon selections. Kraft Foods and its Oreo brand celebrated 2012 Pride Month with a colorful (and ultimately controversial) Facebook posting and tweet of the iconic sandwich cookie. And GM received a nomination from the 2012 Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Amplifier Awards for an advertisement that targeted LGBT consumers with a Chevy Volt "coming out" as an electric vehicle.

In this vein, many companies are taking a stance based on economic competitiveness and business opportunity. After Macy's came under attack for releasing a catalogue featuring a same-sex couple atop a wedding cake, the department store released this statement: "Macy's proudly serves a large and diverse marketplace, including customers with a wide range of needs and preferences. We strive to embrace customers of all ethnic backgrounds, ages, races, faith traditions, genders and lifestyles through the products we sell and the content of our marketing." Fred Keeton of Caesars Entertainment ? which is listed as a platinum member of the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association Foundation ? put it simply: "The LGBT community is an incredibly important market segment for our properties."

Public corporate support for LGBT equality brings with it both business risk and opportunity. But the last five years have seen a significant increase in the number of companies deciding to embrace the reward rather than the risk of voicing support for LGBT rights. The rationale is clear ? supporting marriage equality makes business sense, and according to many companies, it's also the right thing to do.

I think the "Fabrication" sub-forum is the best place for this, since this is all about modified door(panel)s that house bigger-than-stock woofers...

So, what's the size of the woofers you've squeezed into your doors?

And off-course: Pictures and a little explination are very welcome!

I'm currently running the Dyn MW182. Dyn calls it a 10", it has the frame size and cone area of a 9". In the TL, it's extremely easy, not much harder than just making the hole bigger. A little more complicated than that but very easy.

The beginning of the project, just a mock up with some wood spacer behind the mid.

The 650 that came out and the 182 that went in:

Right after I put the new carpet in, obviously right before I re-installed the glove box:

They fit behind the stock door card, no exterior modifications, looks all stock.

One of my goals is to keep it as stock as possible looking. Even with the midrange in the kicks, most people do not notice there's a system in the car. They had to be flush mounted to the sheet metal (with the supplied rubber gasket and a little sound deadener in between) in order to fit them behind the door card without modifications. Surprisingly I have less door vibrations at a given SPL with these than with the smaller 6.5s.

One of life's big questions, should I check the 10" or the 8-9" poll box?

I'll have to get and edit in pics but my old/previous work van, a 1994 Grand Voyager had only 3.5" in the dash and 6x9s in the rear liftgate. I cut out the door card and metal door skin to fit 6.5s with a jigsaw and other various metal eating tools and went through Silverflute wool cone 6.5s (sitting in garage for 5 years now lol), Goldwood 6.5s (cheap and quickly sold), Peerless CSC-X 6.5s and then ID OEM V1 6.5s w/the carbon fiber looking cone and phase plug...

I bought a pair of black steel mesh CSS grills and mounted them to the door card to give excursion clearance since the doors were pancake flat.

The panels were covered w/plexi and silicone and duct tape lol and the mids/Northcreek (Scanspeak derivative) large format home audio tweets were powered by a Next Vrz4.400 that I bought when first joining DIYMA...

My new '08 Uplander has slim Massive Audio SX6 point source coaxials for now but after running the ID OEMs active for a bit (or my AA poly cones or old Peerless HDS mids) I'm going for 8s...

For the most part they were. I had a 1/4" aluminum baffle glued to the door skin using body panel adhesive- made a baffle, cut the same shape out of the door skin, and glued the flat aluminum one in place.

These guys were pretty deep speakers, no hope for the window to go all the way down. And the car wasn't modern enough to have window memory.

I was wondering if yours hit at all.

Quote:

Were they flush mounted? When my window hits the last 1/2" of travel it makes a small clunk from tapping the magnet. It goes all the way down luckily. I need to space the window frame or reset the window memory to not go down the last 1/2" on auto down.

Spain's crisis budget aims at spending cuts not tax rises

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain announced a crisis budget for 2013 based mostly on spending cuts on Thursday in what many see as an effort to pre-empt the likely conditions of an international bailout.

Ministry budgets were slashed by 8.9 percent for next year and public sector wages frozen for a third year as Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy battles to trim one of the euro zone's biggest deficits.

"This is a crisis budget aimed at emerging from the crisis ... In this budget there is a larger adjustment of spending than revenue," Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria told a news conference after a marathon six-hour cabinet meeting.

Beset by anti-austerity protests and threats of secession by the wealthy northwestern region of Catalonia, Rajoy is resisting market and diplomatic pressure to apply for a rescue, partly out of concern for national sovereignty but also because European Union paymaster Germany insists Spain doesn't need help.

The central government sees budget savings of 13 billion euros in 2013, with spending down 7.3 percent -- not including social security and interest payments -- and income rising 4 percent thanks to a 15 percent leap in value-added tax take.

The budget goes to parliament on Saturday and debates could last weeks. The country's 17 autonomous regions still must present budgets and find an additional 5 billion euros in adjustments to meet overall public deficit reduction goals.

Spain, the euro zone's fourth largest economy, is now at the center of the euro debt crisis. Investors fear Madrid cannot control its finances and question whether Rajoy has the political will to take all the necessary but unpopular measures.

Madrid is talking to EU authorities about the terms of a possible aid package that would trigger an European Central Bank bond-buying program and ease Spain's unsustainable funding costs.

Brussels has demanded an independent budget oversight body, which Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said on Thursday would be created to review budget execution. The government is still analyzing potential conditions for aid, he said.

The conservative government said tax revenue would be higher than originally budgeted in 2012 -- partly due to a hike in VAT -- allowing it to comfortably cut the public deficit to 6.3 percent from close to 9 percent last year.

Uncertainty over Spain's ability to control spending in regional governments -- which account for half of all public spending and could threaten the deficit goal -- has increased due to the Catalan demands for independence.

The autonomous region's parliament voted on Thursday to hold a referendum on independence, but Saenz de Santamaria said the region must consult the rest of the country first.

PENSIONS WILL BE REVIEWED

Pensions, earmarked by the European Commission as a key area for reform, will rise by 1 percent next year but Treasury Minister Cristobal Montoro would not be drawn on whether the government would pay an inflation catch-up which could be over 3 percent this year.

In a sign of how tight the budget is this year the government said it would use 3 billion euros from social security reserves to pay pensions in 2012.

Before the end of the year the government will announce a pension reform to restrict early retirement and to review sustainability of the pension system which could open the door to accelerating an increase in retirement age.

The deputy premier said the government would set out 43 new laws to reform the economy over the next six months and including reforms to the labor market, public administrations, energy services and telecommunications sectors.

The detailed timetable for economic reforms goes beyond what the European Commission has required and is an ambitious step forward, the EU's top economic official said on Thursday in response to the government announcements.

"The reforms are clearly targeted at some of the most pressing policy challenges," EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn said in a statement.

Market reaction was cautious.

"The first impressions (of the announcements) are good, heading towards a major adjustment in spending rather than in revenues," said Jose Luis Martinez of Citigroup in Madrid.

"However, we see as too optimistic the macroeconomic assumption of 0.5 percent recession for the next year. We see a scenario with a deeper recession and if this were the case, further spending cuts will be needed."

De Guindos' statement that the 2012 budget deficit target would be met this year due to a solid increase in revenues will also be viewed with suspicion with many economists expecting the government to miss the objective.

Spending cuts continue to heap pressure on Spaniards and are likely to fuel further street protests, which have become increasingly violent as tensions rise and police use force to disperse crowds.

A quarter of all Spanish workers are unemployed and tens of thousands have been evicted from their homes since a housing bubble burst in 2008 and plummeting consumer and business sentiment tipped the country into a four-year economic slump.

The prime minister's image, both at home and abroad, has deteriorated rapidly since his party won an absolute parliamentary majority last November.

Newspaper pictures of Rajoy enjoying a cigar on Sixth Avenue in New York on Wednesday while protesters gathered in Madrid fuelled criticism of his detached attitude toward Spain's mounting problems.

Sound Real Estate Advice And Guidance For Property Buyers | Eric ...

There?s nothing that can make buying real estate easy, but the first purchase is always the hardest. Many first-time buyers feel overwhelmed by the cost and commitment of a property purchase. Use the following advice to help ease your worries, increase your confidence and hopefully, your success.

Be informed about the different types of houses located in the neighborhood which you?re interested in. You don?t always want to shoot for the biggest house in any particular neighborhood. If you decide to sell the house in the future, it will be difficult for you to obtain the value of the house. This is because every other competing house in the neighborhood will cost less.

During the home purchasing process, make sure you hire the people you rely on for expertise. Do not hire the appraiser or inspector chosen by the seller. Hiring your own appraiser can be an extra cost, but it will be worth it. Nevertheless, you can benefit greatly from hiring your own professionals who are trustworthy and will be working for your best interests. This is one situation where learning the truth can potentially save you thousands of dollars and much heartache.

TIP! Find a trustworthy partner to work with when buying a large and expensive commercial property. It will facilitate the qualification process for the commercial property loan.

It is important to get pre-qualified for a home loan before you go searching for a house. It is very discouraging to find the perfect home only to find you can?t get a loan for it. Getting approved for a loan also takes quite a bit of time, so it is best to get this out of the way as soon as possible.

Go for your dream home. Some investors say that it isn?t a good time for buying or selling larger houses, but some disagree. This may be the best time to buy your dream property because housing prices are expected to rise.

Homes that back up to busy roads are not as appealing as those that are in quieter areas. Don?t purchase a bargain property that will only earn you a minimal amount of rental income. You might be okay with this noise, but it will be harder to sell it if you want to move.

TIP! A home should only have a fireplace located in the family room unless the property is located in a particularly chilly climate. It can be difficult to keep up with fireplaces, especially if you don?t use them.

The first thing to do before you even move your family or furnishings into the new house, is to buy insurance. If you put this off your insurance will not cover anything that happens, disaster can happen at any time!

When considering a home, hire only professional inspectors. It will require a fair amount of money, but the advantage over having someone you know inspect the home is that you can hold a bad inspection against a professional inspector, while there is little you can do to a relative.

Have any questions you wish to ask your potential real estate agent written out so you don?t forget anything important. Ask them for important information. This can include how many houses they have sold in the past twelve months and how many they sold near the location you?re looking at. A reputable agent will definitely be able to answer all questions you have.

TIP! When interviewing agents to help you through the buying process, find out how long each agent has lived in the town or area in which you are searching. A long-term resident will know more about the community?s infrastructure, local laws and neighborhood characteristics that a newcomer may not know.

Real estate agents need to get a hold of their former clients during anniversaries and holidays of their date of purchase. When they hear from you again, they will know that they helped during your buying selling experience. When you are done with your greeting, make sure they know that you are working as a referral and would love for them to recommend you to anyone they know.

When you are negotiating the price of real estate, it is best to have a moderate approach. Many people get too aggressive so that they can get a great deal, and they end up overdoing it and losing it. Simply state your preferences and then let the lawyer and the Realtor handle the negotiations as their job descriptions require!

Try not to be discouraged if the seller of a home you want to purchase does not accept your offer, often times sellers are willing to negotiate different aspects of the sale with you, to make the sale still possible. Such possibilities include offering to cover your closing costs or even do some upgrades and repairs to the property prior to your taking up residence.

TIP! Before you begin searching for a new home, get a copy of your credit report. After you have the credit report in hand, review your copy and report any inaccuracies that you might find.

When looking to purchase a new home, it is very important to avoid the trap of judging a house based on its decor. Smart sellers hide their house?s flaws with decorative items, so you need to learn how to look past the decor and analyze a home based on its architecture and structural condition. If you base your buying decisions on only the home?s decor, you could pay for it later because you failed to see a large structural problem.

After reading this, are you fired up now about buying some property? These tips should help you get rid of your worries! Utilize the tips that fit into your particular circumstances in order to have maximum success. Purchasing real estate shouldn?t be hard. It feels great to finally own property! All you have to do is calculate its cost, and always make smart

SGMA Changes its name after 107 years to Sports ... - Recreation Law

Dear Members and Friends of SGMA:

For the past 107 years, the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA) has been your source of research-based knowledge, a leader in professional development, the sports and fitness industry?s voice and advocate on Capitol Hill, and the community on which you rely to address common challenges and take collective action.

We all recognize the rapid and deep change our industry has experienced in recent years. As our industry evolves, our organization has identified the need to realign our positioning, communications and service offerings. Thus, following careful deliberations based on an extensive strategic planning process, the SGMA Board of Directors has approved a complete rebranding process for our Association. I?d like to walk you through some of these exciting developments:

Transition of Our Name ? SGMA to SFIA

The SGMA Board of Directors has approved a new name for our organization: Sports & Fitness Industry Association, with the acronym SFIA.

Our research and personal experiences indicate that common understandings of ?sporting goods? and ?manufacturers? have evolved while our terminology has not. Thus, the change from ?Sporting Goods? to ?Sports & Fitness? is more definitive about our inclusion of brands connected to fitness and active lifestyle products. The change from ?Manufacturers? to ?Industry? embraces a broader community including suppliers, brands, major sports and fitness retailers and partners ? a much clearer reflection of our current and future membership. This is not a change in philosophy for our organization as we already have many members in these categories. It is simply a more accurate and transparent indication of the industry segments that we serve. And while we continue to embrace, celebrate and support the many companies who manufacture their own products, our general membership (including many of those manufacturers) has indicated that there is a need to move beyond the traditional label of a ?manufacturers? association.

Formal Ratification of the Name Change

While the Board has approved all of the elements connected to the overall rebranding, changing the name of SGMA requires a vote of the membership, which will be done by proxy and ratified at the SGMA Annual meeting this fall.

This Is About Much More Than a Name Change: New Industry Initiatives

This rebranding process is about much more than a name change. It starts with the basics?a laser focus on the new mission statement developed by our Board of Directors: To Promote Sports and Fitness Participation and Industry Vitality. It is a reflection of a broad Board-driven, multi-year strategic planning process that instills a disciplined focus on four core offerings: Thought Leadership & Events, Public & Industry Affairs, Member Services and Research Insights.

Specifically, we are working hard to enhance our member offerings with the launch of several initiatives including:

  • New Thought Leadership initiatives including the 2013 SFIA Industry Leaders Summit, scheduled for September 25-26, 2013.

  • A national campaign to grow sport and fitness participation: PHIT America

  • A new ?member friendly?? website: www.SFIA.org

  • A comprehensive SFIA Supplier Directory

  • A groundbreaking new ?Grassroots Sports Participation in America? research report

  • Content enhancements and design updates to our weekly e-newsletter, InBrief

  • Major upgrades to our Product Testing member benefit

You will learn more about these initiatives in the coming weeks. In the meantime, for more information, please visit the FAQ section on our website.

I want to emphasize that the foundation of our organization and the core constituents who benefit from their affiliation with our organization remains the same. The rebranding process simply helps us articulate a more accurate picture of who we represent and how we bring value to those entities while simultaneously identifying our members? most pressing issues and providing resources that help address those problems.

In short, this is a very exciting time in the long, proud history of our trade association. Vampire squid no Gordon Gekko

Vampyroteuthis infernalis not all that rapacious

Web edition : 10:10 am

An ominously named creature of the deep that has come to signify the most predatory aspects of Wall Street turns out to be more of a dumpster-diving scavenger than a blood-sucking predator.

Vampyroteuthis infernalis came to broader attention in 2009 when Rolling Stone compared one investment bank to a ?great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity, relentlessly jamming its blood funnel into anything that smells like money.?

Webbing between the animal?s eight arms does flare out a bit like a funnel, but the vampire squid?s ?blood funnel? is pure fantasy. But how V. infernalis, not a true squid but an oddball relative, feeds and what it does with its two long, distinctive filaments has been a puzzle.

The supposedly relentless hunter just waits to glean whatever debris sinks to its level, marine biologists report online September 26 in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B. The animals extend the filaments to snag whatever brushes against them, such as crumbs of falling fish or crustaceans, castaway filmy parts or even fecal pellets, says Henk-Jan Hoving of the Monterey Bay Research Institute in Moss Landing, Calif. Then the animals reel in a filament and use their eight arms to scrape off the marine equivalent of dust bunnies.

Hoving and Monterey colleague Bruce Robison suggest that this low-energy approach lets vampire squid spend much of their lives in low-oxygen water.

TransPhone smartphone / tablet hybrid gets official, doesn't quite topple ASUS PadFone

TransPhone yet another smartphonetablet combo

It looks like CMIT's TransPhone smartphone-tablet combo has finally made it to stores after its debut in May of last year. A competitor to the ASUS PadFone, the TransPhone fits inside a 7-inch display dubbed the TransPad, and runs Android 2.3.5. The TransPhone has a 3.5-inch screen, a Snapdragon S1 processor, 512MB RAM and ROM, 512MB internal memory plus a 32GB microSD card, a 5-megapixel camera, and more. As for price, a TransPhone plus TransPad combo is $429.99 while individual TransPads are $140 each and a solo TransPhone is $379. You can even go hog wild and get a Family Pack for $999 or a Business Pack for $4499. Seeing as the ASUS PadFone adds a keyboard to the mix, and that there's a PadFone 2 coming up soon, we have a feeling the TransPhone won't be much of a threat to ASUS.

Families of Polish plane crash victims ask: Who did we bury?

WARSAW (Reuters) - Relatives of the victims of a plane crash that killed Poland's president and 95 others in 2010 are facing the possibility that they buried strangers instead of their loved ones due to mistakes identifying remains.

Polish prosecutors said on Tuesday that the remains of Anna Walentynowicz, one of the people killed in the crash near the Russian city of Smolensk, were mixed up with those of another victim.

That revelation has raised questions about how many of the other bodies were wrongly identified after the crash - an event which traumatized the nation and still complicates relations with Poland's neighbor Russia.

Prosecutors have so far ordered that the remains of four victims should be exhumed to check if they are indeed the people their relatives thought they buried.

"I don't want to say that there will be a wave of exhumations just yet, but it won't end with just four," said Rafal Rogalski, a lawyer representing the relatives of several victims, including former President Lech Kaczynski.

"What has happened only underlines the approach of the Russian authorities and how reliable their documentation is. For now I can say that I am only certain (about the identity) of 10 or 11 bodies," he told Reuters.

Lawyers and relatives said on Wednesday they were considering requesting that many more bodies be unearthed.

The crash has particular poignancy for Poles because it evokes memories of the Katyn massacre, when Soviet secret police murdered an estimated 22,000 Poles in a forest during World War Two. The crash victims were travelling to Smolensk to take part in ceremonies to mark Katyn's fiftieth anniversary.

"ETERNAL INFAMY"

The remains of the Smolensk victims were examined by Russian investigators in the presence of Polish officials in Moscow before being flown back to Warsaw in metal coffins. They were then handed over to relatives for burial.

Opposition leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski, twin brother of the late president who died in the crash with other civilian and military officials, accused the government of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk of failing to make sure Russian officials dealt properly with the remains.

"The people responsible for what happened with the exhumation should leave Polish politics and leave in eternal infamy," said Kaczynski, who has been accused of seeking to score political points from the disaster.

The Justice Minister was scheduled to discuss the exhumations at a parliamentary session on Thursday.

"The original sin was when Poland decided not to work with Russian investigators hand-in-hand immediately after the crash," said Stefan Hambura, an attorney for the family of Walentynowicz. A former Solidarity activist, her case sparked the review of how the remains were identified.

Russian investigators have blamed the crew of the Polish government Tu-154 for the crash, while a Polish report pointed the finger at Russian ground controllers for allowing the jet to land in heavy fog at a small airport near Smolensk.

Hambura told Reuters he had already asked military prosecutors to test the remains of Stefan Malak, a Smolensk victim, at the request of his brother.

Magdalena Merta, a widow of another victim, said she regretted not checking whether it really was the body of her husband that had lain in the coffin she kept in her home before the funeral.

"This was a chance to establish his identity," she told Polish television.

"I regret that I did not stand up to my family in this matter, but they feared that opening it would have been the last thing I did in my life."

The Ministry of Finance has delivered negligent borrowers from ...

Treasury acknowledges that financial benefit in the form of savings on the interest on the loan in case of delay of payment from an individual does not arise. So to pay tax on the income from the borrowers do not have it.

For several years, some bank borrowers ( of them Savings, etc.) who have committed even minor delinquencies on loans at the end of the calendar year to be notified about the need to file a tax return for the past year and pay the tax on personal income from the material benefits received from savings on interest on the loan.

Under the terms of the loan agreements of several banks current interest on the loan for part of the unpaid loan principal cease to accrue. It turns out, according to the Savings Bank during the period of delay in the payment of the next customer uses a part of the loan for free or credited at 0%, ie, receives financial benefits from savings on interest. And according to the Tax Code of material gain from an individual occurs when the rate of ruble credit below two thirds of the refinancing rate of the Central Bank and currency? 9% per annum. This gain and taxed, and the rate of 35%.

Typically, the amount of such tax claims against the borrower who has made late payments for one or two months, tens, sometimes hundreds of rubles. But the consequences of late submission of tax returns ( to 30 April of the year following the reporting year) is more serious. According to the Tax Code, the penalty only for failure to tax return on time with no personal income tax debt? 1000 rubles., And if the debt is added and the percentage of it.

? I not only had to pay a fine for overdue Sberbank one payment on consumer credits, but and spend time on preparation of the declaration, a trip to the tax office in April 2012 for the co-pay 17 rubles. PIT! But ignore the bank?s advice, I was afraid, because getting ready to leave for the Netherlands?? Natalia tells borrowing Savings cousin.

That late payment on the loan is classified as a source of material benefit, doubted even in the FTS. In March, the tax service said ? Vedomosti?: ? FTS aware of the problem and soon will hold consultations with the Finance Ministry, the results of which will be worked out in respect of the official position of the appearance of the material benefit of the borrower in case of delay loan payments?.

Recently, the Ministry of Finance Minister announced his position. In a letter dated September 10, 2012 ? 03-04-05/4-1092 ( text below) states that the definition of material benefit in respect of interest accrued on the amount overdue credit, the Tax Code does not provide.

HBT: Wood talked to Epstein about Cubs job

Kerry Wood was back at Wrigley Field over the weekend for a ceremony honoring his Cubs career and it sounds like the recently retired right-hander will eventually be rejoining the organization in some capacity.

?We?ve kicked some ideas around, met with and talked to Theo [Epstein] about it,? Wood said, via Sahadev Sharma of ESPN Chicago. ?We?re all kinda on the same page and I?m sure we?ll get something done soon and work out all the details. Definitely want to be around and definitely want to be involved.?

Wood, who retired in mid-May, liked playing for the Cubs so much that he turned down bigger contract offers to return as a free agent in 2011 and has talked previously about thinking highly of Theo Epstein in general.

He also mentioned wanting to see the Cubs bring Sammy Sosa back into the fold at some point, but those odds seem quite a bit longer.

Ancient, sarcophagus-like tombs discovered in Philippines jungle

The tombs?could be at least 1,000 years old based on carbon-dating tests done on a human tooth found in one of the limestone graves.

By Jim Gomez,?Associated Press / September 20, 2012

In this Feb. 26, 2011 photo released by the Philippine National Museum, Filipino archeologists gather items around a limestone coffin at Mount Kamhantik, near Mulanay town in Quezon province, eastern Philippines. Archeologists have unearthed remnants of what they believe is a 1,000-year-old village on the jungle-covered mountaintop in the Philippines with limestone coffins of a type never before found in this Southeast Asian nation, officials said, Sept. 20.

National Museum official Eusebio Dizon said the village on Mount Kamhantik, near Mulanay town in Quezon province, could be at least 1,000 years old based on U.S. carbon dating tests done on a human tooth found in one of 15 limestone graves he and other archaeologists have dug out since last year.

The discovery of the rectangular?tombs, which were carved into limestone outcrops jutting from the forest ground, is important because it is the first indication that Filipinos at that time practiced a more advanced burial ritual than previously thought and that they used metal tools to carve the coffins.

Past archaeological discoveries have shown Filipinos of that era used wooden coffins in the country's mountainous north and earthen coffins and jars elsewhere, according to Dizon, who has done extensive archaeological work and studies in the?Philippines?and 27 other countries over the past 35 years.

Aside from the?tombs, archaeologists have found thousands of shards of earthen jars, metal objects and bone fragments of humans, monkeys, wild pigs and other animals in the?tombs. The limestone outcrops had round holes where wooden posts of houses or sheds may have once stood, Dizon told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview.

The?tombs?were similar to ancient sarcophagus, which have become popular tourist attractions in Egypt and Europe, although the ones found in Mulanay were simple box-like limestone coffins without mythological or elaborate human images on the tops and sides.

Archaeologists have only worked on a small portion of a five-hectare (12-acre) forest area, where Mulanay officials said more artifacts and limestone coffins could be buried.

A preliminary National Museum report said its top archaeologists found "a complex archaeological site with both habitation and burial remains from the period of approximately 10th to the 14th century ... the first of its kind in the?Philippines?having carved limestone?tombs."

The discovery has been welcomed with excitement in Mulanay, a sleepy coastal town of 50,000 people in an impoverished mountainous region that until recently was best known as a major battleground between army troops and Marxist rebels.

"Before, if you mention this region, people will say 'Oh, that's NPA country,'" Mulanay Mayor Joselito Ojeda said, referring to the New People's Army rebels. "But that era is past and now we can erase that image and this archaeological site will be a big help."

Mulanay tourism officer Sanny Cortez said that after archaeologists have finished their work in a few years, his town plans to turn Mount Kamhantik's peak into an archaeological and ecotourism park. A museum would also be built nearby.

Despite the loss of thick tree covers in the 1,300-foot (396-meter) mountain's foothills as villagers clear the jungle for homes and farms, the forested mountain still harbors a rich wildlife, including rare hornbills, wild cats and huge numbers of cave bats, including a white one recently seen by environmental officials. The mountaintop offers a scenic view of Tayabas Bay and the peak of Mayon volcano, famous for its near-perfect cone, Ojeda said.

The archaeological site is part of 280 hectares (692 acres) of forest land that was declared a government-protected area in 1998 to keep away treasure hunters and slash-and-burn farmers. Treasure hunters looking for gold exposed some of the limestone?tombs?years ago, but it was only last year that Manila-based archaeologists started to unearth the graves and artifacts and realize the significance of the find.

Treasure hunting has damaged many archaeological sites in the country. In the early 1990s, Filipino archaeologists led by Dizon discovered that 2,000-year-old burial jars with unique human face designs had been destroyed by treasure hunters in a cave in Maitum town in southern Sarangani province.

Archaeologists worked for a few years to glue the sack loads of clay shards piece by piece and restored more than 150 ancient burial jars to shape. Some of the Maitum jars are displayed at the National Museum in Manila with a plan to exhibit them in France next year, Dizon said.
