Social media mistakes - Joined Up Business Networking

Social Media provides a wide range of tools to help grow your firm and also can allow you to have some fun. But people often express reservations about using it, in case they do it wrong. Son ensure you?re not making the biggest 3 mistakes in your social networking.

Social Media Mistake 3: Being an automaton

Have you seen odd cyborg beings in the movies, strange half alive creatures simply repeating tasks and not really being successful. Why do so many people execute their social media campaigns like that?

You can?t produce a load of tweets (or other types of posts), programme them to churn out endlessly and then sit back waiting your fortune. Social media are a range of tools to allow you to take part in social networking, which implies interaction. Discussing, contributing, adding to other peoples thoughts and guess what, they start to do it back! I recently stopped interacting for a while, and wrote about the results in ?does social media work?? (click on the title to read it). You could start by commenting on this article, what do you think of it ? am I right, or way off beam here?

Social Media Mistake 2: Not using your rifle sights

Imagine shooting with a superb rifle, but not looking in the targeting scope you?d miss the target! Profiles and searches allow you to find who you want to talk to, so talk to them, not anybody and certainly not everybody. Do you have Twitter lists for those that you?re most interested in (make your stalking list private though)?

This is linked closely to content and tone of voice. When you know your target audience, you can say things that they will find interesting ? not what you find interesting!

Once you?ve identified who, the 5 level relationship model will really help you get more from them.

The biggest Social Media mistake: No strategy

To paraphrase Hollywood

?step away from the computer?.

If you?re not really sure why you you?re using social media or unsure about what you want out of it, then turn it off. If you don?t it will suck up your day and spit it out.

It?s easily fixed though, set yourself some sensible business reasons for using it and put a value on them. Set some easy goals to start with, then learn and extend them. The reason for putting a value on them is easy, without a value you?ll always ask ?how long should I spend? ? which is the most stupid question (but maybe that?s for another article). If you?re wondering about what might be in your targets and how you might execute your strategy, click on 7 ways anyone can generate business via Twitter, it?s a good starting point.

What do you think, what social media mistakes have you seen out there? Do share them ? it?s great to know I?ve piqued your interest.
